3 Reasons To See The Eye Doctor Regularly

Posted on: 27 July 2016

Many people know how important it is to go to the doctor for a physical often. Preventative care is very important for your body. However, many people fail to realize just how important it is to see the eye doctor regularly. Seeing the eye doctor is vital to your health. Here are some reasons you should be seeing the eye doctor.

1. To Update Prescriptions

If you wear glasses or contacts you need to see the eye doctor often to make sure that you have the prescription. It is not unusual for people's eyesight to change over time, especially if they have astigmatism. If you wear the wrong prescription you could get headaches, strain your eyes, and even feel like you are off balanced.

This is especially the case if you are a pregnant or nursing woman. The hormones in your body can cause your eyesight to change, which is why you should see an eye doctor during and after pregnancy to make sure that you are wearing the right prescription.

2. To Detect Eye Disease

One of the most important reasons to go to the eye doctor is to detect diseases in the eye. Unlike other diseases eye diseases have very few physical symptoms, if any. This means that you could have an advanced eye disease and not realize it at all until it is too late. You need to catch things like glaucoma, eye cancer and other infections early on or you could be at risk for losing your sight all together.

The only way to detect these problems is to have certain tests done at the doctor. Even your family doctor will not be able to tell if your eyes are healthy. This is why you should have an appointment set yearly to make sure your eyes are healthy.

3. Proper Use Of Contacts

Contacts are great for many reasons, however there are some dangers associated with contacts. If you are wearing your contacts incorrectly it could cause dry eyes, damage the cornea, or could give you an infection. You might need contacts that have more air passing through, ones that need to be replaced more often, or more instruction on how to care for them. Without seeing the eye doctor you might continue using contacts improperly and damaging your eyes.

These are just a couple of the many reasons you should be seeing an eye doctor regularly. To learn more, contact an eye clinic like Leader Heights Eye Center.
