Is A Mini Or Full Tummy Tuck Right For You?

Following pregnancy and excessive weight loss, you could experience sagging skin and loose muscles in the abdomen. Unfortunately, exercise and a healthy diet cannot help resolve the problem. However, a tummy tuck can.

There are two types of tummy tuck. Both procedures have their benefits and disadvantages. If you are considering a tummy tuck, here is what you need to know about a mini and full tummy tuck.

Is a Mini Tummy Tuck Right for You?

A mini tummy tuck is designed to help tighten the muscles that are in your lower abdomen. The incision for the procedure is made above the pubic bone. The surgeon will then remove the excess fat. He or she will also tighten your muscles and skin. The procedure only takes a couple of hours and can be performed on an outpatient basis.

After the procedure, there will be some scarring, but it is typically limited to a small, thin scar. Depending on the extent of the procedure, your recovery time could be as little as a week. During your recovery time, you will need to rest, but you should be able to return to work after the first week of the healing period.

Mini tummy tucks are most effective for people who do not extensive skin tightening. The area that is tightened during the procedure is extremely limited. Attempting to tighten more than the limited area could result in additional scarring.

Is a Full Tummy Tuck Right for You?

A full tummy tuck is more comprehensive than the mini tummy tuck. The procedure not only involves removing excess fat; it focuses on treating the muscle separation that sometimes occurs in women who have had more than one pregnancy.

During the procedure, the surgeon will separate the navel from the abdominal wall and pull the muscles tight. The remaining skin is stretched over the area and the excess parts are removed.

The procedure can take longer than a mini tummy tuck. How long depends on the amount of fat that needs to be removed. Your surgeon can provide you with an estimated time. Unlike a mini tummy tuck, a full tummy tuck is an inpatient procedure.

The recovery time for the full tummy tuck is longer. It can take a month or longer to heal. During the healing period, your surgeon will periodically monitor you for signs of infection and other possible complications.

Before deciding on which type of tummy tuck you want to undergo, talk to your cosmetic surgeon. He or she will provide a recommendation on which would work best for your case.
